Knock unbidden on the door ((Schön))

The evening on which Schön and Hunter had agreed upon a TV marathon to watch 'Twilight Zone' episodes had come very quickly, even though it had been a couple of days since the Spring Fair and the last time they had spoken.

Hunter had a lot of artwork to keep himself occupied in the time between the two events. There were a couple of sketches in his notepad from the evening of the Spring Fair that he had wanted to get on canvas. Some are watercolors. Some are color pencils. Some are using the rose petals, soaked in paint. In all aspects, he had been busy.

During the day, before Schön would arrive at the apartment, Hunter had been quite busy finishing a charcoal piece depicting an elderly couple sharing an intimate, and touching moment. He wrapped that up right before he was expecting Schön, so had to jump in the bathroom quickly to get cleaned and dressed for the evening.

Then he went into the kitchen to bring out the snacks that he had prepared for the evening. There are delights such as cranberry pretzel clusters, brownie batter popcorn, assorted chocolate-dipped fruit (bananas, kiwis and strawberries), and a cheese platter. For a wine choice, Hunter had selected a Wild Vines strawberry white zinfandel.

With everything else in place, Hunter does one more walk-through of his apartment, to make sure everything is prepared for his guest.

Schön gives a contemplative nod. "I am not surprised. Quoth the poet, 'you can never go home again.'"

"Every show I have seen have been incredible. I am so glad that you have exposed me to such wonderful writing."

"These shows are so much better... than the ones my dad produced."

Schön smiles, always pleased to have an appreciative audience for something he's chosen to share. "I'm glad you like them. Dare I ask what sort of work your father turned out? It wasn't," he pauses, and it's hard to tell if he's mocking or being seriously dire when he concludes, "reality television, was it?"

"Most of his most financial productive shows were reality television, unfortunately. He was also an anchor for..." Hunter pauses to look for the right words. "Reality news coverage."

"He lied for a living."

"'Reality news," Schön echoes, as though tasting the words to tease out the nuances of their meaning. "Of the gossipy, what-are-the-faux-celebrities-in-these-reality-shows-doing-now variety? Or the pundit-with-an-agenda sort?"

"Both. He followed the society gossip. Or made it up, when it was in his favor. But also carried his own agenda. Especially during the time when he decided he wanted to run for political office."

"That was the year that Kendra cursed me. And I was... put into a penthouse for my own protection." Hunter knows that his dad was hiding him from society. It still leaves a bad taste in his mouth.

Schön gives a sniff of disdain, not directed at Hunter. "Someone's protection. Tch, to tread so upon the bonds of kin."

"He was definitely a big part of the reason of why I couldn't come out as gay, until I got away from home."

"I am especially pleased that you won free, then. The rose grows better wild, does it not?"

[losthunter]

Hunter laughs. "Definitely the wild rose is one any prospective gardener hopes to claim in their backyard. The elusive search."

He sips at his wine for a moment, before smiling fondly. "It is always best to have wild roses in your life, however they present themselves."

"Handle gently, and mind the thorns?" Schön jibes, raising his glass in something like a toast.

[losthunter]

"Indeed." Hunter raises his glass too, joining in the toast.

Draining the last from his glass, Schön asks, "shall we have another?" Whether he means episode or glass is anyone's guess.

[losthunter]

"Yes. Another glass..." Hunter pours them some more wine. "And another show to enjoy and expand my mind."

Flashing a grin, Schön advises, "for this next episode, I urge you to cast your mind back to those frightened, conformist days. The Red Scare, the House Unamerican Activities Committee, the belief that nuclear annihilation was only ever moments away." With the stage set, he queues up "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."

Hunter keeps the reminder in his mind as he watches the episode. He finds himself trying to figure out if any of the neighbors are the 'monsters' hidden in plain sight. And is pleasantly surprised by the twist ending.

"Ahhh, playing on other's fears to gain the upper hand. Truly clever writing."

"Who has need of any monster greater than fear, paranoia?"

[losthunter]

"I must admit, I even had thought that one of their neighbors was the 'monster' who was causing all the chaos."

Schön grins. "You see? A great story doesn't merely tell you its events, you experience them! You journey with Atreyu, as it were."

[losthunter]

"It definitely keeps the mind alert and thinking." Hunter doesn't feel tired at the moment, despite the fact that it is a later hour.

"Indeed. Imagine gathering one's family, once a week, with no inkling of what sort of story might unfold, to be woken up by the strange and compelling fantasies framed by Mr. Serling."

[losthunter]

"Was it a very popular show during its time?"

"Oh, yes," he answers with a nod. "Quite popular. Entrancing, in its way. It had several seasons, was revived several times, and enjoyed a number of imitators, the better of which were themselves renewed and revived occasionally."

[losthunter]

"It is such a shame that they don't have quality writers like that anymore. Most of the time, I just use the TV as a video game console."

"Are you so certain that they don't?" Schön challenges. "As you say, you use yours as a conduit for your games--whose writing may also challenge and excite the mind, I may add. When did you last sift the chaff of nine thousand channels in search of a grain of quality?"
