you have my heart, always and forever

Hunter walks cautiously towards Verity's apartment door, balancing a few gifts in his arm for one of his closest friends in the world.

He had wanted to do something special for her. He had thought about a surprise party, but wasn't sure if that would cause any issues considering Verity's abilities. Plus, there he didn't want to accidentally not invite someone who was important to Verity.

She was very important to him. And Hunter wanted to show her that, the best way he could. And so, Hunter had worked a few weeks on a few special gifts, that were currently wrapped up in pretty, glittery boxes.

Approaching the door, Hunter delicately balanced the boxes for a moment, so he could knock and let Verity know that she had a guest.

Despite the impression she may have given people regarding the importance of birthdays in her life, Verity doesn't think much about her own. Birthday parties are for other people. (No, a surprise party would not be a good idea, the only thing she hates more than being the center of attention is not getting to prepare for it.) And this year, she's pretty completely forgotten that her own is coming up.

When Hunter knocks, she's home, dealing with all those things she deals with and lounging around in a tee, comfy pants, and ridiculously long sweater. She wasn't expecting visitors, just her and Bobbi until Matt comes home. Not that Hunter will be unwelcome.

Surprising, though. He's been so busy lately, they haven't had much time to see each other. She smiles when she opens the door and sees him. "Hunter! Hey. Come in. What's up?"

Verity is adorable in the tee, comfy pants and long sweater. As much as Hunter believes she is very beautiful in her natural setting, he is glad there is no other surprise guests with him.

"I have come bearing gifts for a special birthday gal. Know of any around?" He winks playfully.

She's pretty cute, even with her hair down. Bobbi's excited to see him too. Hunter is a good tall one and she's pretty sure there'll be pets coming her way. Look how easy she makes it for him, jumping up onto the back of the couch where she's at such a convenient height? He can put those boxes down any old place, as far as she's concerned.

"Birthday... oh. Oh yeah. I wonder if that's why I've been craving cake?" The last part is said mostly to herself as she closes the door behind him. Turning back, she catches that wink and gives him a smirk in reply. "Thank you for remembering."

"Well good thing this box right here," He gestures to the cake box that is in one hand. "Has a cake in it."

He finds a place to place down the boxes. Three of them in total. The cake box. A smaller white box decorated with a swirly yellow ribbon, and a larger yellow box decorated with a white ribbon.

Then with his arms free, he turns to give Verity a hug. "Hello beautiful."

"Mm, all prepared today." There's plenty of places to put boxes. Some of them are even out of Bobbi's reach (preferable when there's cake involved; that much sugar is not good for a little doggo). She's very curious about the other two, but well, that'll come in its own good time won't it? She's even more curious about what kind of cake it is. Birthday cake is serious business!

He isn't left waiting long to give her that hug and he's getting one back. He'll just have to live with that. "Hello, handsome. I've missed you."

"I have missed you too." Hunter holds onto that hug for longer than normal. He is making up for the lost time.

"And Miss Bobbi, I didn't forget about you." He reaches into his pocket, where he takes out a smaller gift.

A good long hug is just what she loves. She's not going anywhere until she has to, and even when the hug is finished she's keeping an arm around him.

Bobbi's so excited to be getting a present! She leans in to sniff at the box, and at Hunter's hand, tail wagging with canine joy. "Presents for both of us, hm? We're so spoiled. What do you say, Bobbi?"

Bobbi says woof!

Close enough?

Said present might smell like bacon (since it is a doggie treat, flavored as such). The wrapping paper is dog-friendly, so Hunter will let Bobbi take it from his hand and unwrap it.

"You both deserve to be spoiled."

"I'll agree that Bobbi deserves it. And I'm not gonna complain."

Bobbi takes her box with a happy ruff and trots off to open it in the messiest way possible. Little scraps of paper will flutter around her like confetti.

"So, where should we start?"

"Well, since you were craving cake... how about we start with that." Hunter returns to the kitchen to open the cake box. Inside is a very artistically-decorated cake, complete with flower petals formed from the frosting.

"I like your thinking." Her arms wrap around him again while he opens the box. It's a beautiful cake and she takes her time admiring it. "Gorgeous. Of course, you'd find the most artistic one. I'll get some plates. What would you like to drink with it?"

Whatever it is, she'll get it while she's in the kitchen. "So, what have you been up to lately?"

"I picked up the cake from a bakery, but I decorated it." Hunter smiles softly. He wanted to put a little bit of himself into the cake. And a little bit of her -- with the flowers.

"How about some tea?" He suggested to the question about his drink preference.

"I have been doing some soul searching. I had Schön and Faris over to get some guidance on what some of my dreams about Kendra might have been about..."

"I shouldn't be surprised you can bend fondant to your will as easily as everything else. Is there anything you can't do, sweetie?" She'll have a hard time believing so, if he claims that's the case.

"Tea it is." She'll put water on to boil and gets everything else ready while they wait. "Tea and cake... sounds like a party. Should I get a fancy hat?"

Plates and things can be set out while she listens. Her hands'll be free for more hugging soon enough. "I hope they were able to help?" Faris, she doesn't know well, but she knows just how far Schön will go for a friend and suspects he has some connections that would be useful.

"Well don't expect me to solve any scientific equations, and I should be able to keep amazing you." Hunter winked.

"It isn't an official birthday celebration without fancy hats."

"They were. Schön was very helpful in allowing me the use of an illusion spell, so I could show them my dream. The Faris and Schön were able to solve the riddle-speak of Kendra."

"It was pointed out to me that I might have been too over-zealous in putting my past behind me. I was forgetting about strengths that I had displayed as Kyle."

"What, you mean you didn't bring me a working theory of everything? Geez, what kind of friend even are you?" The wink is an invitation to sass him right?

She listens while she makes the tea. Magic from Schön sounds just about right. It's the sort of thing he'd do. And answering riddles. Interesting answers, from the sound of it, but she saves her comments until after the tea is steeping. "We are all built on the foundation of who we were yesterday. So, tell me about Kyle?"

"Well, Faris and I went back to my old neighborhood, just so I could walk around a little." Hunter sits down, as he begins his story.

"My childhood home really didn't inspire anything. It did give Faris the opportunity to learn a little more about humans. When I explained to him that my dad provided me with pretty decent lifestyle, and then had to detail how not all families live in upscale neighborhoods. And how some families have to struggle to meet their needs."

"Then we went to my old school. Kendra was there. She led us to the main foyer, where I had made a lot of speeches as Kyle. And remembering those moments, I recalled how passionate of a speaker I was. How confident I was in speaking to such large crowds."

"Kyle had this ability to make people listen to him."

There are a few soft hums of thought, but mostly, she's quiet while she listens. This is important. An eyebrow lifts at the mention of seeing Kendra, or perhaps, how calm he is about it. (She's been cursed a lot longer and wouldn't be so chill if she were faced with the person responsible.)

"You have your ways of making people listen. Your art."

"I am very glad that my art speaks to people. But when I get an invitation to attend a gala, and be presented as the artist... I still struggle slightly facing those situations."

"And I should be able to speak as passionately as my art does."

"Hey." Ver reaches over to rub his arm lightly. "Nobody's good at everything. That's okay. It's okay to want to be something you're not, but 'should' can be a hurtful word. It's okay to not be everything."

Someone may have been dealing with issues of inadequacy in therapy lately.

He smiles up at her. "I feel so lucky to have such great friends in my life."

"I do want to be comfortable at those art shows. To stand beside my art, with my head held high. Ready to answer the questions those art patrons might have."

She smiles back before turning her attention back to the tea. Time to pour. "You've got good taste. And then you've got me. I guess everyone's got their guilty junk-food pleasure."

Working on. Not worked through. An important distinction!

"That'd be a good thing to work toward. I can help you practice if you want. Between not understanding art and making funny faces at you, I should give you a run for your money."

"Now that is an arrangement that I can easily agree too." Hunter smiled.

"And I didn't even need to bribe you with a promise of cookies." Ver smiles and stirs some honey into her tea. "So when do you want to start? Do you have a show coming up soon?"

"Well, when my marble sculpture is finished, I would like to put it on display. And before I create any artwork to display alongside the sculpture, I do need to finish my promised pieces for Schön."

Hunter also puts a little honey in his tea.

"I'm sure he'd like that." But debt collection isn't strictly her job, so she won't say anything else about it. "I hope we get to see your marble masterpiece soon. I'm a little surprised it isn't done yet. But I suppose it's the medium?"
