New Year's isn't a terribly happy time in Jim's life, normally. Only four days before his birthday, he's usually already trying to scout out a place to hide away and possibly get drunk while he waits it out. So he's never been part of the ball drop festivities.
He does laugh a little at Verity's suggestion. "Or observe kashrut." He doesn't mind that it's tourist food. Jim never takes any food for granted, no matter what quality. He's got pretty good reasons for that, none of which he likes to think about.
"I think I'll go with the salmon. Synthesizers don't do fish very well and it's probably fresher here than I can get in Iowa. The green apple martini sounds good too; I haven't had one of those in ages."
