Dancing, Drinks and Drag ((Jim, Verity)

Hunter has been looking forward to this night for a long time. He has a table booked at his favorite Drag bar. He is looking forward to dressing up, and enjoying a few drinks with two of his favorite people. And he is sure that both Jim and Verity will enjoy a night out on the town.

Right now, Hunter is waiting in his New York apartment, where he is going to meet up with both Jim and Verity. It is the best place to get together, before heading out to the bar. Both Jim and Verity know his PINpoint coordinates. And besides, they don't have to navigate the Drag bar trying to find Hunter.

Tonight, Hunter is wearing a long gold dress. It is designed to show off his arms. And has a long exposed back. The look is completed with an elaborate head piece and deep, rich make-up that flatters his whole look.

He is excited to have Jim and Verity show up and to see their outfits.

Jim has been looking forward to this ever since Hunter brought it up, and when he arrives, he's glad to see that Hunter's outfit looks different enough from his own, even though it's a similar color. The captain's dress is gold as well, one shoulder bare, with a thigh-high slit that shows off his legs, wearing strappy gold high-heeled sandals. And rather than wear a wig, he's let his regulation haircut grow out enough to style it a bit, accentuated by a pair of dangling gold earrings in the shape of Starfleet's arrowhead sigil. It's been a while since he's really worn any makeup, so he enlisted Uhura and Spock to help doll him up without going overboard.

He grins once he sees Hunter. "Hey, you look great."

Dressing for drag night was easy for Ver in more than one way. First, she doesn't need the intense makeup; second, she dresses like this for work on the regular. All she needs is a suit from her closet and a hat to hide her hair. Hunter will get the reference. She can't decide if her wedding rings look out of place or not, but she's not taking them off either way.

This being Verity, she, of course, doesn't arrive empty-handed. She comes bearing a casserole, which is also a good excuse to not be looking around too much just in case she's interrupting something. "Knock knock." The casserole goes into the fridge, which should give the boys plenty of time to remember they invited a third wheel. "I figured you two'll be hungry in the morning so I brought breakfast for you, you just need to put it in the oven."

Jim looks fantastic. So of course, Hunter can't resist pulling Jim into his arms for a moment and greet him with a kiss. "So do you."

Verity gets an affectionate smile. And Hunter chuckles at the suit she is wearing, in appreciation. His smile brightens when he sees the casserole. "And that is why my cupboards are never bare, Jim."

He lets go of Jim, to go over to Verity and give her an affectionate hug. "Thank you for looking after me."

If Jim hadn't already liked Verity, which he does, the fact that she brought food puts her squarely in the captain's good books. Anyone willing to feed their friends is good folk. "You cooked? Wow, thanks. I can't wait to try it." His praise may be simple, but it couldn't be more honest.

He doesn't figure they're anywhere close enough for hugs on his part, so he doesn't go for one, letting Hunter take care of that. "You look great," he says, completely at ease with his attire. "I like the hat. It makes the whole outfit."

Being able to cook is sometimes her only redeeming virtue, so she has to build those brownie points while she can. (Sometimes with actual brownies.) The thanks and praise gets her smiling, and Hunter's hug is warmly returned. "You're welcome. Both of you."

Verity appreciates that Jim doesn't try for a hug, but she'll come around. It takes her longer than usual to warm up to new people, but there are some perks to waiting. Like the food. She tugs the brim of her hat when it's mentioned. "Thanks. You two deserve an appropriately dapper escort. Love how you coordinated. You both look great."

"I fell in love with this fabric as soon as I found it. And it helps that gold is Jim's favorite color." Hunter smiles over at the other man.

"I have called us a car to take us to and from the club. It should be here in ten minutes."

"Thanks." It's been a while since he's gotten this dressed up, so it's good to hear he's still got it.

Jim isn't used to having to wait so long for transportation, but he rolls with it well enough, reminding himself that beaming technology doesn't exist yet, and it'd be a frivolous use of tech anyway. "So we've got a few minutes to kill."

They're dressing up for each other? This has gone further than she thought. She's going to chalk it up as yet another one of those things she doesn't understand. The smile she musters in answer to the comment is almost not awkward.

"You're spoiling us." It's probably pointless to point that out to Hunter, since he likely already knows and is doing it on purpose, but it needs saying. "How are your roses?"

"I just didn't want any of us to feel like we had to watch what we were drinking." Having a designated driver in a situation like this is a good thing.

"They are doing lovely. I have a fourth generation hybrid that is now flourishing beautifully."

Probably for the best. Even if Jim doesn't get tipsy, the last combustion engine vehicle he drove went into a quarry. On purpose, but still.

"One of those Nexus cross-breeds you mentioned?" Jim asks. Flowers aren't one of his more knowledgeable areas, but he does appreciate them for their aesthetics.

Verity nods her understanding. She won't be drinking much for other reasons, but there's no need to be a downer about the evening. And anyway, she's a city girl. She's not much good at driving.

"That was a hint, honey." The reminder comes with a gentle nudge. Hunter didn't think he was going to get away with just talking about his roses while she was there, did he?

Hunter smirks slightly at that gentle nudge. "It is..." He answers Jim's question. Then pours everyone a small glass of wine, before the cab arrives.

"I am also flourishing beautifully." He teases Verity a little. He doesn't mind talking about himself. "It seems the company of a good man was just what the doctor ordered."

Jim pretends to look thoughtful. "I don't recall that being on Bones' usual list of prescriptions."

Honestly, she wanted to see the flowers. But she'll take wine and talking about someone who isn't her. "Well, obviously. You're well-fed and get plenty of sunshine," she teases back. "And just as pretty as any of your roses."

Jim's comment gets a curious look. "Your doctor is named 'Bones'? That's a little on the nose."

They can take their wine onto the balcony, and see the rose garden at the same time. The best of both worlds. There are a few less roses at Hunter's New York apartment, than compared to his Nexus dwelling. He has been transplanting some.

"That is Jim's nickname for him."

Jim chuckles a bit, taking his wine and following Hunter out to the balcony. "His actual name's Leonard McCoy," he says to Verity, "but I've been calling him Bones since the day we met, way before he was my CMO. The name stuck and I can't call him Leonard without it sounding weird."

That seems pretty much perfect. Verity is so fond of flowers. Even if this garden is still growing in, she'll enjoy it.

"Oh. That makes more sense." In her defense, she comes from a comic book world. Meaningful Names is a Thing. See: her own father's sense of humor. "It must be nice, having people on your ship who you've known a while. Assuming you're friends."

Hunter does not want to speak for Jim on his friendship with McCoy, so he will leave that question for the other man to address.

He can talk about meeting McCoy, and some of the other crew members, in a moment.

Jim nods, taking a sip from his wine. "Yeah, we're pretty close. Bones and I were roommates all three years we were at the Academy together. Most of my senior crew were classmates, so we get along pretty well."

Verity almost asks how a ship ends up with so many young people in command. Then she thinks about the kinds of things that cause that sort of situation and reconsiders the question. "That's good. Probably makes things run smoother."

She sips her wine before adding, "I know I couldn't work with Hunter, we'd never get anything done."

"That is very true." Hunter smiles at Verity's comment about the troubles they would encounter, if they worked together.

"I had a chance to meet some of Jim's crew members. I have had them over here for supper. And we are planning other supper events."

The tale is indeed a tragic one. Jim would be willing to tell it, but he doesn't want to drag down the mood either, so it's probably for the best that she didn't ask.

"We're going to be grounded for a few months while our ship is being repaired," Jim adds, as he's aware that making so many plans might seem a bit sudden. "We've all got a lot of free time on our hands in the meantime."

They can trade their Tragic Backstories another day, over something stronger than wine.

"There are worse places than the Nexus to have free time and a good meal. Have you been to the Windy Cliffs yet? Seems like the sort of place adventurers would enjoy." Like they need help finding interesting places to go. "Or is your crew more in need of peace and quiet?"

"Or has all the Nexus outings been to bars or pubs?" Hunter winks playfully at Jim.

He nudges his shoulder against Hunter's, smiling a little. "I'll have you know, I've only been to a couple of bars so far, and two of those times didn't involve any alcohol."

Jim leans lightly against the balcony railing, looking over at Verity curiously. "Depends on the crewman. Spock's more the 'rest and meditation' type, and I don't think Scotty would consider time away from the ship a vacation, but I've got some adventurers on the crew. What're the cliffs like?"
