Dancing, Drinks and Drag ((Jim, Verity)

Hunter has been looking forward to this night for a long time. He has a table booked at his favorite Drag bar. He is looking forward to dressing up, and enjoying a few drinks with two of his favorite people. And he is sure that both Jim and Verity will enjoy a night out on the town.

Right now, Hunter is waiting in his New York apartment, where he is going to meet up with both Jim and Verity. It is the best place to get together, before heading out to the bar. Both Jim and Verity know his PINpoint coordinates. And besides, they don't have to navigate the Drag bar trying to find Hunter.

Tonight, Hunter is wearing a long gold dress. It is designed to show off his arms. And has a long exposed back. The look is completed with an elaborate head piece and deep, rich make-up that flatters his whole look.

He is excited to have Jim and Verity show up and to see their outfits.

[recommending a post order of Hunter/Jim/Verity]

Jim doesn't mind playing a part in drawing attention away from Verity. It's hard to be subtle when you're a six-foot-tall blond in a bright gold dress, after all, and it's a nicely novel feeling to have people solely paying attention to him because of how he looks, rather than who he is.

He's also enjoying playing tourist, something he rarely gets to do these days, not having to refrain from people-watching or examining the decor. The music is pretty old, from his perspective, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as much of it may be tunes he hasn't heard before.

"Reminds me of this bar down in New Orleans I passed through once," he remarks, as they're led towards their assigned alcove.

[OOC: Because Photobucket has abruptly decided that third-party hosting should cost $400/year and is holding all previously uploaded images hostage, here are rehosted links to Jim's dress and hairstyle for future reference.]

[So annoying that Photobucket did that. :/]

Ver smiles when Hunter wraps an arm around her and returns the favor, wrapping her arm around his shoulders. He has nothing to fear when Verity's around to protect him. They make a formidable force in the crowd, in their way. She's still grateful the lines are progressing so quickly.

The private table is a blessing, as is the chance to get used to the space before the show starts. She makes notes of the exits, the doors the staff will use and the ones that lead out of the building. Jim can safely assume this is Samus' training. (Yes, Verity's probably going to be quizzed about it later.)

She makes sure Hunter and Jim are seated comfortably before taking her own seat. "Oh? Which part, the disco balls and glitter everywhere?"

[personal profile] boldygoing 2017-07-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Jim laughs a little at the questions. "Glitter and disco, absolutely. It was like Mardi Gras all year 'round. I only did actual Mardi Gras once, but they know how to throw a hell of a party down there."

[I think I got all the images fixed now? Also, I'm assuming we're working off the actual menu?]

Several exits and a kitchen downstairs; pretty standard for a NYC restaurant.

"I figure you can throw a party like that just about anywhere with enough booze," she points out. "Although, given how many frat houses try every year, maybe you're on to something..."

Speaking of, she'll look over the drinks menu briefly. She will never understand the adolescent obsession with giving drinks provocative names. Process of elimination makes choosing her drink easy, and she's soon offering the menu to the others.

[Damn, now I'm hungry IRL. ;) ]

"It's not so much the enthusiasm as it is the scale," Jim answers. "Hard to compete with an entire city getting in on it. Not impossible, but I haven't seen it done anywhere else, myself."

There are so many appealing things on the menu that he's having a hard time deciding on his order. "Got any recommendations?"
brave_heart_verity: (are you serious?)

[personal profile] brave_heart_verity 2017-07-20 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
[I want a cheeseburger so bad... but I'm too lazy to drive a half-mile to McD's.]

"True, you'd never see that in Manhattan. Most people would just reschedule their week to avoid the traffic snarl and get on with their lives." She has a great deal of affection for the attitude of staying out of it. It's a philosophy she tries to embrace.

Ver isn't surprised this is what Hunter thinks of as a party, all bright and sparkly. She's seen what he left in the closet. Sometimes she forgets he was one of those social types. "You're not lacking company to go out with, you know. If you're missing it so much, do something about it."

It's so hard for her to not say something snarky about the food. It's a tourist trap, she knows that, but still. They use American cheese, and shouldn't being that bland be something drag queens are allergic to? "Well, don't be a vegan, for a start."

New Year's isn't a terribly happy time in Jim's life, normally. Only four days before his birthday, he's usually already trying to scout out a place to hide away and possibly get drunk while he waits it out. So he's never been part of the ball drop festivities.

He does laugh a little at Verity's suggestion. "Or observe kashrut." He doesn't mind that it's tourist food. Jim never takes any food for granted, no matter what quality. He's got pretty good reasons for that, none of which he likes to think about.

"I think I'll go with the salmon. Synthesizers don't do fish very well and it's probably fresher here than I can get in Iowa. The green apple martini sounds good too; I haven't had one of those in ages."

[personal profile] brave_heart_verity 2017-07-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Verity takes food seriously. It was one of the few pleasures she had in life for so long. But she understands most people don't care as much as she does. Still, she's going to have to have them over for dinner soon. Remind Jim what food is supposed to taste like.

"Synthesized food? I think we know why I'm never exploring space." Definitely having Jim over for dinner. Their decisions get little nods from her before she glances at the menu again to decide, "Bolognese and a French martini."

Once everything's decided, she scans the room again before bracing her elbows on the table to cup her chin. "Is space as beautiful as the Internet wants us to believe?"

Jim would be appreciative of a home-cooked meal. It's not so much that he doesn't know what good food is like, or that he doesn't care, because he does. Unlike most people in his century, Jim knows what real hunger is like, and he's not sure he'll ever be able to forget. So he'll eat anything on offer, regardless of whether he likes it or not. But when it is something he enjoys, all the better.

He smiles at Verity's question, and Hunter's contribution to the subject. "I don't know what the Internet says, but it's pretty gorgeous. There's a lot of nothing in between stops, but the backdrop's usually spectacular anyway. With nothing but the ship's exterior lights to drown out the stars, you can see the whole band of the Milky Way most of the time. There are countless planets and star systems out there, each one unique, and all sorts of interstellar phenomena that we hadn't seen before."

[personal profile] brave_heart_verity 2017-07-22 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Verity's good at ignoring unwanted flirtation, so when the waitress leaves Ver's mostly amused by Hunter's blushing. "Enjoying yourself?" The question is innocent, the tone not so much.

It's lucky for Jim there's going to be a show to distract her, otherwise, she might try to make him tell her stories all night. She loves stories, and going into space is still one of the ultimate adventures for someone like her. "We can barely see the stars around here," she sighs.

"In a big city, I'm not surprised," Jim replies to Verity. Now that he's thinking about it, he's not sure she's said where she lives. "Riverside was always decent for stargazing, but I almost never did it when I was a kid, except when we had a comet pass by in 2241."

Hunter's enthusiasm is at least somewhat infectious. Jim hasn't really been to a real drag show before; some of the excitement is lost when you live in a society where gendered clothing isn't so strict of a thing anymore. But he's having fun regardless, getting what he considers an authentic twenty-first century experience. And if Hunter is having a good time, that's the most important thing, in Jim's opinion.
brave_heart_verity: (doubt it but I love ya)

[personal profile] brave_heart_verity 2017-07-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunter gets a warm smile from her. It's nice to see him enjoying himself and feeling more comfortable in public. He's such a sweetheart. If getting him to relax in public means drag, then she'll suffer the glitter infestation. There have been worse things she's done for a friend.

"You grew up someplace called Riverside? Sounds positively bucolic." Jim gets a smile too, to soften the teasing. "Were there cows?" The country always has cows, that's what makes it the country, right? She's a city girl, she doesn't know.
boldygoing: (Smirk)

[personal profile] boldygoing 2017-07-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
She may be a city girl, but she's not wrong. "Sure, one of my neighbors had a couple cows," Jim admits, without an ounce of shame for playing into stereotypes. "It was an okay place to grow up. A bit too quiet for me." He'll leave it to her if she wants to assume that's why he eventually left.

"What's so funny about that?" he asks Hunter, giving him a teasing look, to see if he'll try to weasel out of it or stick to his guns.

He happily claims his martini, automatically giving a flirty sort of smile to the waitress. "Is that so?"

[Sorry, sorry! My boss has LOST HIS MIND so. Scrambling. And shaking mad a couple of times. :(]

"Sometimes, quiet some nice," she admits. "Not so nice I'm willing to give up the perks of city life... once you get used to 24-hour access to live music and exotic food, I don't think there's any going back. Are cows nice?" Maybe it's a good thing nobody's getting the steak.

Ver glances at the waitress, going a little pale at the thought of being dragged up on stage. Clearly not volunteering, this one. That drink came at a very convenient time for her.

[Also sorry to hear that. D: You do what you've gotta do to get through it. We don't mind the wait. IRL stuff always comes first.]

"Sure, cows are sweethearts. Bulls, not so much." Good thing indeed. Jim's well aware of where burgers come from, and he likes them as much as the next guy, but something seems off about reminiscing about his neighbor's herd while chowing down on one of their ancestors. "It's the geese you have to watch out for. Those bastards are mean."

He continues smiling at the waitress, taking a sip from his martini. "I bet you could." Not a commitment, exactly - he wants Hunter and Verity to have fun too, and he's enjoying spending his downtime with them - but leaving the option open.

[Thanks for understanding. Short version, if you want the gossip, is boss who runs a small local business and who has changed the name and branding at least 4 times in 2 years is doing that AGAIN and is also changing the focus of the business, and is so busy trying to start a whole OTHER business he's not showing up for appointments. Meanwhile, I'm polishing my resume and sending it everywhere I can because I need out obvs.]

"Geese? Mean? I thought they just fought over bread." Geese in parks are kind of a different breed. "I guess it's only fair that delicious things want to fight back."

Verity's fun wouldn't be diminished if Jim went up on stage. So long as she's not bothered about it, she's happy to be witness to their antics. A good witness, who knows when to put her phone away... and when not to. While Jim's flirting with the waitress, Ver gives Hunter a questioning look. If he wants in on that, now's his time to speak up.

[Sounds like a good idea to get the hell out ASAP, yeesh.]

Jim laughs a little at Verity's fairly logical conclusion. "Sounds about right. There's no scarier farm animal to strike fear into a little boy's heart than being chased by a pissed off goose that's almost as big as you are. Sam learned that one the hard way."

And of course he has to smile at Hunter's suggestion. "You know I wasn't kidding about the exotic dancing thing, right?" he teases. "I could tone it down a bit."
