carve out the secrets hidden inside ((Faris, Schön))

Hunter has been pretty distracted the last few days, working on his large marble project. Working on marble is lot more messy than any painting he has done before. He has a large drape cloth covering the majority of his art studio, to protect the floor from marble dust.

The carving takes time too. He has made a lot of good progress on the upper-half, that if someone tried hard enough to figure out what he was making, they would see the initial signs of a Chimera being carved out of the stone.

But even with the desire to complete this project (which seems to be consuming him at times), Hunter has not forgotten about Faris. Or that he still wants to try to help Faris to find his door, and the one person who has the ability to do that is Schön.

So, Schön was invited over the apartment, so they can discuss Faris' situation and hopefully find his doorway. Right now, Hunter is dusting, so there is no excess dust in the air before his guest arrives.

Hunter moves to the fridge, to grab a bottle of wine and a few glasses. After a pause, he also grabs a small container of motor oil for Faris. He is now in the habit of keeping such things in his kitchen, where they can be accessed by Faris when the K'da wants a meal.

"I have been working on a new project." Hunter gestures to the big marble slab in his art room. "It has been on my mind a lot. But still, I am well."

He pours two glasses of wine for him and Schön, setting them on the table. And then a mixture of the wine and motor oil for Faris.

"It has been interesting to watch the process of creation," Faris adds. "My people do not tend to create visual works of art, but appreciation is another matter."

Faris can't really use wine glasses, so he's going to have to use a bowl instead. It works well enough for him, and he nods in thanks to Hunter in thanks.

"That is good to hear--and better, to hear your muse is upon you," the thin man offers, smiling again. "Dare I hope for an advance viewing, or is patience the virtue I'll be consoling myself with today?"

As he moves into the room and collects his glass, Schön casts a curious glance to Faris. "Might I ask what forms of art your people favor?"

"Well, the first stages aren't covered..." Hunter glances back at the art room. "So you are welcome to see those. But it is rough work."

"Permanence is not in our nature," Faris explains. "K'da poetry is the pride of our species. The Shontine now record our history in their computer databanks, but oral tradition is strong in our culture and still survives today."

"Thank you." Art's creation is of just as much interest to him as the finished product. Sometimes more. He casts an eye over the rough work. "Is this a first foray into sculpture, for you? A bold choice, if so."

"Oral traditions make for strong memories," he observes, "and often strong senses of the self. Some of the oldest tales are still passed by mouth alone--and some of the most important."

"I had a dream that inspired the work that I am aiming to craft out of the marble." Hunter mentions softly.

"I have been trying to look deeper within the marble, to seek the true creature that is hidden within."

Faris nods in agreement. "Who are we, if not our memories?" he asks rhetorically.

He turns his attention to Hunter's sculpture in progress, the subject of conversation at the moment. "You believe it is a creature?"

"Hatching from a square egg," Schön muses, fingertips playing idly over the contours of the rough stone without quite touching them.

"I wonder, Faris--the people of Earth find their sense of scent tied closely with memory. Is it thus for your people, as well?"

"It is because of my dreams that I believe a creature is hidden within the marble. The creature I am discovering is known as a Chimera, in human mythology."

"Tales spoke that the Chimera had a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail. Some even depict the creature with three heads, and wings."

Hunter's rough work is one of those descriptions, with three heads waiting to be further uncovered.

"To an extent, certainly," Faris says, nodding his draconic head. "I do not know how it is for humans, but I am reminded of things when I smell certain scents."

He also listens closely to Hunter's description of what creature his square marble egg will be hatching into. "An interesting creature."

Schön gives a thoughtful nod at Faris' answer, and gives the block of marble another speculative look before returning his attention to his hosts. "Interesting, indeed. And you dreamed this creature, you say?"

"Not of the creature itself." Hunter rub the back of his head, a little self-consciously. "I had another dream about Kendra. And when I tried to speak to her again, I got some strange riddles again."

"When I woke up, and looked at the marble... I just saw the creature inside."

"Riddles?" Faris asks. "What sort of riddles?" He's not sure his Earth language skills are up to the task of interpretation, but perhaps saying them out loud will help Hunter. Or maybe Schön can help translate them.

"Ah, dreams and riddles," the thin man sighs wistfully. "Ever the oracle's prerogative."

"I have been thinking of going back to that nightclub, where Kendra and I first met. It has played a key role in all the realistic dreams of her since then."

Hunter pauses for a moment. Then recollects what Kendra told him. "She told me that I was not looking hard enough because I only sought with my eyes. That I had become as blind as my first love. That I must look within myself to be ready to face the answers I was seeking."

"That I look for the monsters. That I look for the heroes."

"Are you not meant to?" Faris asks, slightly puzzled.

"It may be," Schön muses, "a warning about expectations. When one looks about, expecting monsters, one finds them--whether there are any present or not. Likewise, when one expects to see heroes, one might place faith too swiftly in what one finds--or one might wait to be rescued."

"Not meant to do what?" Hunter asks Faris for clarification.

He listens to Schön's musing carefully. "And before, I was expecting love, to be rescued from the curse."

"Perhaps my expectations are too grand for Kendra."

"To look for heroes or monsters," Faris clarifies.

And Schön's speculation does make sense, in a way. "Hmm, your assumptions shape your reality?"

"If you think you must go West," Schön observes, "will you take the very fine road leading South, or note a grassless patch between two trees and imagine it a trail?"

"Sometimes those hidden trails are exactly the path you need to take." Hunter notes in understanding.

Faris nods his head. "If you approach someone assuming they are an enemy, your hostility may make them turn to violence as well. If you approach in friendship, someone wary of you may instead be set at ease."

Schön gauges Hunter's interpretation of his metaphor for a moment, before nodding to Faris. "That is so; the undecided often await a sign to choose their course."

"There is always something about wanting to know you are making the right decisions. About wanting that sign that tells you that things are okay."

Hunter smiles softly. "But in the end, you need to take your own path, and be brave enough to follow it all the way to the end."
